The Baby Big Oak
In early 2009, this small live oak tree grown from an acorn picked up from the Big Oak in Thomasville was planted at Pebble Hill Plantation. For the past two years, Byron Rhodes of Stony Creek Landscaping and Irrigation [shown right], and Marvin Vinson, the grounds manager of Pebble Hill Plantation [shown below], have overseen the maintenance of the baby tree. Despite drought and unusually hot and cold weather, the tree has flourished. When planted, it was approximately 24 inches tall. The leaves of the tree looked anything but like those of a live oak.

Today, the tree stands 6 foot 8 inches tall and is well on its way to adulthood. Visitors to Pebble Hill are welcome to visit the youngster while they are touring the grounds. Ask for directions at the Visitor Center to see the "Baby Big Oak."
